Histria: recent archaeological discoveries on the Danube Delta.
The ancient and recent history of a great archaeological site (C7th BC
C7th CE) ed. Irina Baldescu
In this interview, we publish recent reports by a group of archaeologists (Irina
Achim, Adela Bâltâc, Valentin Bottez, Viorica Rusu Bolindet, Alexandru
Suceveanu) who are actively working on the archaeological site of Histria (Romania).
They provide up-to date information on the progress of the excavations, and
on the features and history of the site which was discovered in 1914. The distinctive
characteristic of Histria, which is situated south of the Danube Delta, is that
it preserves remains that cover the enormous period of time between the archaic
Greek period (C7th BC) to the late Roman Era (C7th CE). The extraordinary history
of the site enables research to be concentrated on interesting cases of stratification
and cultural hybridisation, as has happened with the recent finds related to
one of the Christian basilicas discovered in the area, and is a rare example
of the superimposition of a place of Christian worship on a religious pagan
site. Detailed information on the archaeological site can be found on http://www.cimec.ro/Arheologie/web-histria/index_eng.htm
The bronze head of Shipka Thrace on show ed. Laura Bumbalova
Some of the most spectacular archaeological finds made in Bulgaria in the last
five years were put on display this year at an exhibition in the Palazzo del
Quirinale (Tesori della Bulgaria. Dal Neolitico al Medioevo, Rome,
Palazzo del Quirinale, 15 February-15 March 2006). Among the works on display,
the bronze head of Shipka, discovered during the summer of 2004 by Gheorghi
Kitov, (an interview with the archaeologist was published in La Rivista di
Engramma 40, March - April 2005), held centre stage the incomparable significance of the find and
its undisputed appeal together with Italian involvement in its restoration and
archaeometrical research made it an object of particular interest. In this article
we publish recent interviews with Prof. Vincenzo Saladino from the University
of Florence, Dr. Maria Reho from the Academy of Sciences of Bulgaria, and the
restorer Edilberto Formigli from the Centro Europeo delle Ricerche sul Restauro
in Siena, who reveal their processes of the analysis and restoration of the
sculpture.
