The connection between historical writing and psychoanalysis’ methods, between science and fiction, and the different conceptions of ‘time’ and ‘truth’ related to these subjects, are the main issues in a number of Michel de Certeau’s papers, now collected and translated in Italian, and published as Storia e psicoanalisi. The recent Italian edition of Forme di storia (Rome 2006), a collection of papers by Hayden White edited by Edoardo Tortarolo, provides the starting point to consider the american historian’s point of view in the light of italian scholarly debate, and to confront his methodological position with the opposite one of Carlo Ginzburg.

Secret combinations and words’ figures. Caramuel’s Metametrics and the impossible history of enigmatography
Seventeenth Century is usually considered the flourishing period of enigmatography, whose history nevertheless has still to be clearly outlined. This essay considers an important specimen of C17th puzzles book, Metametrics by spanish scholar Juan Caramuel y Lobkowitz (1606-1682). The work is a wide and confused inventory of metrical figures and poetical devices, including acrostics, anagrams, rebus and aenigmas that deal both with Spanish agudeza and matching ability.
