Manet’s nymph: formal derivations
and thematic inspiration
(Seminary Group of The Classical Tradition)
By comparing the figure of the nymph in Manet’s Dejeuneur
sur l’herbe with her Renaissance iconographic models, and
those of Antiquity that preceded them (the Patera of Parabiago),
the montage of the plate proposes a reconstruction of the chain
that leads from Raffaello, via Marcantonio Raimondi (or via
Giorgione/Castagnola) to Manet’s work. |

The impertinent nymph: Victorine and
the patera of Parabiago. (Concerning models for Manet’s Dejeuneur
sur l’herbe, via Raffaello)
(Monica Centanni)
In the essay concerning the iconographic models for Manet’s
Dejeuner sur l’erbe and in Plate 55 of Bilderatlas
that has the same theme as its subject, Warburg presents Manet’s
work as the final result of a process of transmission that
begins with the Renaissance revival of Hellenistic sarcophagi:
in this process an important role is carried out by a ‘mediating
text’ an engraving by Marcantanio Raimondi of a piece by
Rafaello (now lost). Starting with Warburg’s research, Monica
Centanni proposes an identification of new models for both
Manet’s painting and the lost work of Raffaello. Via iconographic
and documentary comparisons that link the works, the essay
reconstructs on the one hand the role of a further possible
‘mediating text’ for Manet, a fresco by Giorgione that
can be seen in a palace in Castelfranco Veneto. On the other,
the essay belies Warburg’s theory that the nymph’s gaze is
entirely of Raffaello’s invention, and suggests a possible
ancient typological model from which the Renaissance artist
could have drawn his figures the iconographic scheme of
the group ‘River and Nymph’ in the so-called Patera of Parabiago.

Classical evasions: Antiquity as reference
In the publicity image for a brand of ceramic products,
the inclusion of a Greek vase with an ‘animated’ figure performs
many functions: it attracts the attention of the public, it gives
the product the added value of preciosity, and ennobles the producer’s
image with the auctoritas of the classical.
