Studies in Christian Iconography

Maria Bergamo, Marina Vicelja

Call for Papers

Émile Mâle wrote, in his seminal studies on medieval art, that Christian art is a symbolic language whose grammar must be learned. An entire century of historical scholarship and art theory has engaged around the semiotic and grammatical value of iconography, and of sacred iconography in particular: on the one hand, the rejection of normativity in favour of pure aesthetics or the freedom of artistic creation, on the other, the dissolution of the very notion of a unified linguistic code into historical and contextual relativism. Some contemporary approaches apply to mediation. Without abandoning the idea of iconography as a regulated intelligible system, they are emphasizing its historicity, mobility, and dependence on practices of reception, thereby restoring to the sacred image a grammar that is no longer normative, but culturally negotiated. Yet, in today’s secularized and multi-religious societies, a new iconographic illiteracycan be observed. With the loss of mediation provided by the superficial shared tradition — that of Western Christianity — the knowledge and the capacity to read sacred images in their original, literal, and properly iconographic meaning have been largely eroded.

The volume will bring together experts to address and discuss these questions from new theoretical, historical, and analytical perspectives. We invite contributions that focus on, but are not limited to, the following topics:

> theory and history of sacred images;
> symbolism and metaphysics of art;
> value and function of images in Christian art;
> reflections on sacred art in the contemporary world;
> comparisons between Christian art and other religious traditions;
> iconographic case studies;
> practices and examples of contemporary Christian art

Call for Papers - ITA

> simbologia e metafisica dell’arte
> valore e funzione dell’immagine nell’arte cristiana
> riflessioni sull’arte sacra nel contemporaneo
> confronti tra arte cristiana e altre tradizioni religiose
> esempi e casi di studio iconografici
> pratiche ed esperienze di arte cristiana contemporanea.
